Radiation Shielding Material

A new technology developed by US radiation shielding research for modified polyethylene (PE) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC). The modified polyethylene and polyvinyl chloride using this technology possess nuclear radiation resistance and can be used as nuclear radiation shielding materials.
This polymer liner uses shielding material made of Tantalum. Tantalum is comparable to lead in terms of material attenuation coefficient and resistance to γ, X-ray, and β radiation, and can effectively absorb radiation.

Radiation Test Conclusion

It is an effective radiation protection suit. Tantalum is comparable to lead in material attenuation coefficient and resistance to γ, X-rays, and β radiation, expressed in g/cm2. For example, for 100KeV photon lines, its material attenuation coefficient is approximately 3.8 cm2/g. For a thickness of 1/3.8=0.26g/cm2, transmission will drop to the 1/e point. Using a density of 3.14g/cm³, a 0.8mm thickness is equivalent to two layers of the current sample, while lead has a density of 11.3g/cm³ and a thickness of 0.2mm.
Physical properties are soft, making it more comfortable to wear than lead protective suits, facilitating work and hand movement, and possessing heat dissipation properties.
Unlike lead, based on radiation shielding technology, it is non-toxic and poses no risk of skin damage or inhalation hazards to the user.

Current product thickness (0.35mm) provides 3 times protection against β rays and 10 times protection against low energy γ rays.
The material attenuation coefficient is used to determine the thickness of the protective suit, requiring excellent shielding against high energy/intensity γ radiation. Based on a comparison of this protective suit with other products, the conclusion regarding shielding effectiveness is: in terms of weight, shielding is similar to lead, but without the pollution and biological hazards of lead.
